Successful With Squidoo?

So around the first of the month of June I had written a few posts about how a friend of mine had introduced me to Squidoo. As a quick overview, Squidoo lets you create a “lens” which is just a page about whatever you want.

You use modules to setup the layout of the page and they have many different publishing options to add some interactivity to your lens.

Anyways, a lot of people use Squidoo to write a lens about a niche topic and then use affiliate links within the lens to make money. My first lens that I wrote was about how to make your own CD covers. Why did I pick that topic? Well because I had just purchased a program called Micro Niche Finder. Micro Niche Finder is a keyword research tool and does a pretty good job at finding well….just like the name, micro niches. So after playing around with it for a bit, I had found that the subject of making your own cd covers was garnering quite a few searches and that there was not a whole lot of competition for it.

So I whipped up a lens and waited. Luckily Google sees Squidoo lenses as being highly relevant, so Google doesn’t mind indexing them fast. Some of the lenses can rank easily in the first couple of spots on Google with the right keyword targeting. I was honestly pretty surprised when I logged in after the first few days of my lens being up and made a quick post about my minor success.

My lens never really went anywhere. I had a small bit of traffic coming in over the next 2 weeks or so and then my lens started to lose it’s rank and the traffic decreased as well. Apparently it seems that you need to keep updating your lens and adding to it to keep it up in the ranks, which does not make a whole lot of sense. Maybe you are supposed to write only a little bit about your topic, see how it does and if it performs well add more to it? I don’t know, seems like that is not a very good plan. I just initially did the best that I could on my lens and assumed that that would be good enough.

Since then I have created one other lens about DVD to MP4 Converters. That lens has done even worse with no traffic at all, oh well. It has been up since the 28th, I thought it would have gotten at least a few visits as I did quite a bit of work on it.

After adding that lens I had almost forgot about Squidoo altogether. It wasn’t until only 2 days ago that I remembered and logged in to my account. It turns out that I had actually made some money from my first lens!! How much was it exactly though? Was it worth the time and effort that I put into it?

Unfortunately no. From the period of 6/1/08 to 6/30/08 I ended up making a whole $.07. Thats right! 7 cents!! Squidoo runs Google Ads on your lens and you make 50% of the revenue generated from the clicks.

Squidoo has a minimum payout of $10 I think. So I won’t be seeing my 7 cents anytime soon. This isn’t to say that you can’t make money on Squidoo, you can and there are quite a few people who make a good deal of money from it. I suppose that I could have made a lot more money had I done a little bit more promotion of my lens by joining the various groups on Squidoo, but I didn’t. Not that I am at a loss, creating a lens is free so you don’t have to pay anything.

But it appears that in order to be successful and rank well on Squidoo, you need to constantly update your lens. Pretty much the way it is with almost everything else, constant updaing keeps the robots interested and coming back for more.

So should you not join Squidoo just because I didn’t make any money? Hell no! You should definitely try it out, I mean really, what do you have to lose? A little bit of your time sure, but you can create a lens about anything that you want. Just make sure to create your lens and leave some content to add to it later or create a lens that can be consistently updated. You should also prepare to search Squidoo’s various groups, join them and ask their members to check out your lens.

Follow this link over to Squidoo. It is my affiliate link and allows you to register under me. When your lens makes it’s first $15 you and me will both get $5 FREE! Not a bad deal right?
