Squidoo’d

So a couple days ago I was busy chatting with a friend of mine. We were on the subject of making money and so he was giving me a few tips about the sites that he uses and how he goes about promoting those sites and such. During our conversation, he mentioned a site called Squidoo.
I had never heard of Squidoo before but after he told me what it is all about, it sounded like it was a great idea. For those that don’t know, Squidoo allows you to create a “lens”. A lens is just a page that can be about anything and everything. It’s really a great way to write about things that you are passionate about because Squidoo has made it really easy to create your own lens and they offer a lot of features. Probably one of the best features is that Squidoo does all the hosting…FREE! You don’t have to pay anything for your page and you can have as many lenses as you want. After browsing around Squidoo and checking it out, I decided to try out my skills and create my first lens.
Earlier in the week I had purchased a keyword research tool so I fired it up and typed in a random phrase. I found a search term that had quite a few searches and very low competition. So I decided to use that phrase as my lens. I searched around a bit more for a few keywords related to the phrase to add to my Squidoo lens. And then after that, I began working.
First off, your best bet is to pick a topic that you know something about. This is going to make it a lot easier to write about it considering you won’t have to do much research if any. Second, make sure what you write is easy to understand and isn’t confusing. People are going to be reading your lens(hopefully) and if they can’t understand it or it doesn’t make sense, they are going to leave. Basically we are applying the same principles as we would to a regular site.
One of the things that had interested me in Squidoo was that my friend had told me it was a good way to make some money. Squidoo provides the hosting for your page, the bandwidth and all of that good stuff. To pay for server costs and everything else, Squidoo has to have ads on your lens. It’s unfortunate, but they are providing a great service already and to be honest, the ads are integrated well into your lens. Don’t get discouraged just yet though, Squidoo gives you 50% of the revenue that is generated from their ads to you! That’s right! They pay you when people click on their ads that they add to your lens. Not a bad deal really as you will pretty much make money whenever somebody clicks on any link/ad on your lens.
Squidoo takes the other 50% of the revenue and takes 45% for themselves to maintain costs. The other 5% goes to charity! Now I don’t know of many sites (if any) that is doing anything like Squidoo. If you are feeling really generous, you can choose to donate a percentage of your profits to a charity listed on Squidoo. So if you are not in it for the money and just want to write about what you are passionate about, you can take the revenue you earn and give it back to those in need.
Another great thing is if you sign up for Squidoo, you can refer your friends and get them to make lenses. If your friend’s lenses make $15, both you and your friend get $5! Not a bad deal and honestly, it shouldn’t be that hard to make $15. Squidoo offers a huge amount of articles and tutorials on how to promote your lens. Squidoo is really a great service and I highly recommend you try it out and create your very own lens, or 2 or 100 ;)
Oh and if you are interested in the lens that I created, its about how to make your own cd covers :)

Heh, well I was gonna add in a really detailed step by step process with a picture of each step. But I decided to just test this out right now and if it doesn’t get a lot of hits, or if somebody suggests adding pictures then I will go ahead and do that.
