Google Webmaster Tools Links

In part 5 of this Google Webmaster Tools series I went over the Statistics page of Webmaster Tools. Today we will be going over the Links page in part 6.

The Links page consists of 3 different sections; Pages with external links, Pages with internal links and Sitelinks.

Pages with external links

This page shows links from other pages on sites that link to pages on your site. When you arrive at this page you will notice a table with some information in it ( hopefully ;) ). This page can be very helpful in showing you what other sites on the web are linking to your site and it’s pages.

There are 2 columns to the table on this page. The first column is the Page column and will list the url of your page that has links to it. The second column is the External links column and this displays the number of links pointing to that particular URL on your site.

Clicking on the number in the External links column will take you to a page displaying all the pages that Googlebot found that link to that particular page. The table will show the exact URL of the page that has the link on it, as well as when the link was last found by Googlebot.

At the top of this table as well as all the other tables listed under the Pages with external links section you will notice a Find link details for (your domain name here) with an input box next to it and a See details button. If you have a lot of pages that have links to them and don’t feel like reading through them all to find a particular page, you can search that page here to see if Googlebot has found any links to it. Just enter the URL of the page in the input box, minus the domain name as it is already there, and click See details. A page will be brought up detailing the page that is linking to your searched page as well as when Googlebot last found that link.

At the bottom of these tables you will also notice 2 links; Download this table and Download all external links. Clicking the Download this table link will save you a file showing the information that you first see when you visit the Pages with external links section.

Clicking Download all external links will give you a file showing the page with a link to it, the page that the link is on and the date that the link was last found.

These links provide the same features that I talked about earlier except in a .CSV format so that you can stylize or edit on your own.

Pages with internal links

The pages with internal links section details all the pages on your site that link to other pages on your site that Googlebot has found.

The format is almost the same as the Pages with external links table with the page URL being displayed and the number of links that link to that particular page.

Once again, there are 2 links at the bottom of the table that allow you to download information about your site in a .CSV file format.

Sitelinks

If you have done a search before on Google, you may have noticed that the first listing contains a section that has links to other pages on the site as well. There can also be a map displayed here or a search box input for the site. This section is referred to as the Sitelinks section and if Googlebot thinks that other links on your site may be relevant to a user’s search, it will list that information here.

The Sitelinks are at the discretion of Google and you may not have Sitelinks showing up for your site. Having an optimized site structure and relevant pages will help in Google possibly providing Sitelinks for your site.

Well, part 6 is over. It is a lot shorter then the other parts but there wasn’t a whole lot to explain here. Part 7 will be coming up shortly and we will be looking at the Sitemaps page of Webmaster Tools. Stay tuned!
